10 places to watch Architecture/Design Lectures Online

Searching online for inspirational lectures in one place is impossible. It is extremely hard to locate a good source website which has a series of lectures from renowned architects, designers, thinkers, scientists or philosophers. Hours are wasted just filtering through the search results. And when you do find it, you are exhausted and want to procrastinate, exactly just what I ended up doing when I was assigned to make a list of the top 10 places to watch Architecture/Design Lecture videos. If you have missed a lecture at your university this could actually help you out. It is a perfect way to spend some extra free time searching for inspiration, especially when you are having one of those sleepless nights.   Here is the LIST!

1.     Architectural Association Institute of Architecture UK

A very well known architectural school famous for its design philosophy, has archived most of the lectures they hold. The duration of the films they have is between an hour and two. The minimum length of the video is 8 minutes, of a recording from 1976 a Lecture given by Rem Koolhas. To name a few other well known speakers, they have Peter Cook, Zaha Hadid Architects, Barnard Tschumi and Moshe Safdie. Every film has the name of the speaker, the topic and duration listed.

Stability Of Structure

Before analysis and design there is crucial stage known as “investigation of structures stability”. It is necessary to determine that the structure we are going to design is stable or not.

Stability in simple words means that structure doesn’t undergo rigid body motion, that structure takes external forces and deforms.

There are two terminologies used in stability “Externally stable” and “Internally Stable” which are explained in this video below. Structure is said to be stable if and only if it is both externally and internally stable.

An experienced engineer will tell just by inspection weather a structure is stable or not and what steps are necessary to make an unstable structure stable

Patrik Schumacher Lecture

As partner in Zaha Hadid Architects and Zaha Hadid's close collaborator since 1988, Patrick Schumacher is one of the leading architects worldwide. Schumacher studied architecture at Stuttgart University (1990) and the Southbank in London. He completed his Ph.D. at the Institute for Cultural Sciences at the University of Klagenfurt in 1999. Together with Brett Steele, he directed the Design Research Laboratory at the Architectural Association in London from 1996.

The work of Zaha Hadid Architects ranks among the most influential there is, both in the professional and academic worlds. Among the many renown projects are the MAXXI Centre of Contemporary Art and Architecture in Rome, which won the Sterling Prize in 2010, the Phaeno Science Centre in Wolfsburg (2005) as well as the office's first building, the Vitra Fire Station in Weil am Rhein (1993). Current projects include Kartal Pendik master plan in Istanbul as well as the master plan for Singapore One North. Most recently the office won RIBA's European Award 2013 for the Pierresvives building in Montpellier as well as an International RIBA Award 2013 for the Galaxy Soho building in Beijing.

Structural Lessons & Wind Tunnel Demonstration

Excavation work began for Burj Khalifa in January 2004 and over the ensuing years to its completion, the building passed many important milestones on its goal to become the tallest man-made structure the world has ever seen. In just 1,325 days since excavation work started in January, 2004, Burj Khalifa became the tallest free-standing structure in the world

Construction Highlights

Over 45,000 m3 (58,900 cu yd) of concrete, weighing more than 110,000 tonnes were used to construct the concrete and steel foundation, which features 192 piles buried more than 50 m (164 ft) deep. Burj Khalifa's construction will have used 330,000 m3 (431,600 cu yd) of concrete and 39,000 tonnes (43,000 ST; 38,000 LT) of steel rebar, and construction will have taken 22 million man-hours.

Exterior cladding of Burj Khalifa began in May 2007 and was completed in September 2009. The vast project involved more than 380 skilled engineers and on-site technicians. At the initial stage of installation, the team progressed at the rate of about 20 to 30 panels per day and eventually achieved as many as 175 panels per day.

The tower accomplished a world record for the highest installation of an aluminium and glass façade, at a height of 512 metres. The total weight of aluminium used on Burj Khalifa is equivalent to that of five A380 aircraft and the total length of stainless steel bull nose fins is 293 times the height of Eiffel Tower in Paris.

In November, 2007, the highest reinforced concrete corewalls were pumped using 80 MPa concrete from ground level; a vertical height of 601 metres. Smashing the previous pumping record on a building of 470m on the Taipei 101; the world’s second tallest tower and the previous world record for vertical pumping of 532 metres for an extension to the Riva del Garda Hydroelectric Power Plant in 1994. The concrete pressure during pumping to this level was nearly 200 bars.

The amount of rebar used for the tower is 31,400 metric tons - laid end to end this would extend over a quarter of the way around the world.

The art world has always been prone to infiltration by fast-talking talentless frauds skilled only in persuading others of their supposed "brilliance". We've seen the guys selling the blank canvases, and the so-called musicians proposing that the sound of a cast-iron bathtub being smashed with sledgehammers is the "new music". It is precisely the fuzzy logic of culture that means that what these people say cannot be scientifically proved wrong. And so they continue to get away with it. To disagree is seen as a sign of cultural ignorance. And there are enough wannabe intellectuals buying into this rubbish that the fraud is effortlessly perpetuated on behalf of the faker.

Daniel Libeskind is architecture's version of such a fast-talking con artist. Against all logic, he's persuaded museums to waste hundreds of millions of dollars on buildings that barely function, that leak extensively and that are hated by the public. It is the role of the self-annointed tastemakers like Libeskind to sneer at the philistine reaction of people who don't know as much as he does, that just don't "get it". His patronizing and condescending attitude comes across in every frame of this incredibly asinine presentation.

But the work remains undeniably crude and unrefined, even revolting. No amount of pretentious jargon can conceal ignorance on this grand scale. No amount of free thinking can ignore the desecration of historical buildings that Libeskind's lesser and unworthy work unneccessarily engenders. And no amount of childish rhetoric can equate with the honest and sincere approach to architectural design that characterised the oeuvres of Gaudi, Brunelleschi, Wright, and a host of other talented professionals.

Libeskind of all people should know that chutzpah is not the same as genius. Only a total schmuck would make that mistake.

“Architecture has always been the medium which defines the spaces we live in, but with the emergence of Digital 3d or “augmented” technology, immaterial stimuli is beginning to encroach upon those spaces. Thus far, digital forms have few relationships to their material context, but there is interesting potential for their interaction. Digital tools act as an infrastructural and informational prosthetic, but will be most profound when they tie back to the human body and engage the built environment.” (Greg Tran)
